Thank you!

We want to thank Carla Rutherford for over nine years of PTA involvement at Miller Perry Elementary.  She will be missed by all, but we know she will continue to serve at the middle and high school level.  Thank you Carla!

Another big thank you goes out to Perkins Restaurants for providing the bicycles awarded in a drawing for perfect attendance this year.  Both a boys and girls bike were given as prizes for this accomplishment.

Have a great summer and check back at the end of July for updates on a back to school event!

Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night

Thank you for coming out to our Chick-fil-A spirit night.  We had a great group of students and families show up to support our school.  We also wanted to thank the parents and several businesses for helping donate time and prizes for our Walk-a-thon. Big thanks go out to Meadowview Gymnastics, Dollywood, Wilderness of the Smokies, YMCA of Kingsport, Sweet Cee Cee's, Marble Slab Creamery of Kingsport and American Eagle.  The money raised ($4552) will be used next year to purchase iPads for the classrooms for future testing and other items needed for teachers/classrooms.

Dr. Seuss Week!

We are going to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday the week of March 4th - 8th and we wanted you to have a schedule of events so your child/children will be able to participate as much as they like.  Reading is an important skill, so we encourage you to read each night as a family.

Monday - The week starts off with an "ALL SCHOOL READING" session at 9:00 am.  Everyone will go into the halls and read silently for 15 minutes.  Kindergarten will hear "One Fish Two Fish" from a special guest!

Tuesday - The 3rd grade class will have a special reading of "Green Eggs and Ham".  Dr. Yennie will be reading to some of our 4th and 5th graders.

WACKY WEDNESDAY - "Foxy Socks Day" - Be creative with your clothes - especially your socks.  A special guest will be reading "The Cat in the Hat" to the 1st and 2nd grades.

Thursday - Dr. Timbs will be reading to the 5th graders.

Friday - GRINCHY GREEN DAY - Wear your Grinchiest green to school.  Tony Shipley will be reading to the 4th graders.  At 2:30, the entire school will sing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss and eat mini cupcakes!

We will also have art projects coordinating with our books for each grade level.  Thank you Ms. Sara!  The 3rd through 5th grades will be designing a poster to go with the book "The Lorax".  We will have a special judge to pick the winners.  First place wins an ice cream party, second place wins lunch in their room, and third place wins popcorn in their room.

Next week we will continue the reading theme with the Book Fair.

Kingsport PTA Council Meeting

Please join us at the Kingsport PTA Council Meeting on Thursday, February  28, 2013 at 6:30 pm.  The meeting will take place at the Higher Education Center, downtown Kingsport, conference room 332, 3rd floor.

The guest speaker for the evening will be Kingsport Board of Education member Susan Lodal.  She will present information on current education issues (i.e. legislation that has been introduced for elected school superintendents as well as school vouchers) that will most certainly directly effect our schools.

Additional guests include Danelle Glasscock, Executive Director of United Way of Greater Kingsport.  She will be sharing information of their new Early Grade Reading initiative.  The steering committee wants to include parental involvement, particularly PTA parental involvement, in getting this initiative up and running.
